You have received an invitation to a big party where there will be a great banquet with the best dishes you can imagine: pasta, sushi, rice, salads, meat, fish, chicken in all its presentations. In short, they will prepare your favorite dishes. What a thrill, I'm going to feast and eat until I'm completely full.
Saturday arrives and you have little or nothing for breakfast, you dream about what you are going to eat at night. The same thing at lunch, you don't try a bite because you can't because of the excitement of what you are going to eat that night. You imagine how full you are going to be.
Christ left us a couple of very powerful tools for our spiritual life: prayer and fasting. We pray fervently, we pray better, longer and longer, and we say beautiful prayers. What about fasting?
Just as we prepare for a feast and go with an empty stomach, in the same way we must be empty to be filled with God's spirit. Fasting!
By definition fasting is: 1) To stop eating for a certain period of time, or 2) To deprive oneself of things that we consider positive. So fasting is not only to stop eating, it is also to stop using the phone, watching Netflix, doing our favorite sport or activity, etc. And all this with a firm purpose, FILL ME UP!
"Is it not rather the fast that I have chosen, to loose the bands of ungodliness, to loose the burdens of oppression, and to let the broken go free, and that you break every yoke? Is it not that you break your bread with the hungry, and shelter the wandering poor at home; that when you see the naked, you cover him, and do not hide yourself from your brother? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your salvation shall soon be seen; and your righteousness shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard." Isaiah 58:6-8
"Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness forty days, and was tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing in those days, and when they were ended, He was hungry" S. Luke 4:1-2
Jesus himself shows us that the way is travel filled with the HOLY SPIRIT. But first we must clean the house for him to enter. If the house is occupied the Spirit of God cannot enter.
Let us fast from all those things that fill our mind and heart that keep us from a full and Lord-directed life. And when we do, let us do it happily and contentedly because we will receive the great banquet: "The Spirit and the glory of God."
God bless you!
