Earlier this year we were invited to visit a foundation where men of all ages are fighting drug addiction. Unlike other foundations, "Padre Eterno" Foundation bases its methodology on the word of God.
I prepared a talk entitled "We are all Peter". Peter the apostle has an important part in man's struggle with his passions: He denied Jesus, doubted his faith and almost killed a soldier during Jesus capture.
Confident as a teacher that was going to teach a new topic, I began the lecture when to my surprise the boys were nodding their heads and reciting bible verses. It was clear that they knew much more about the Bible than I thought they did.
At the end of the talk they invited me to lunch, but I told them I was in a hurry because I had taken longer than expected. Santiago "Santi" who has been in the foundation for some months comes up to me and says "Do not be anxious about anything" Philippians 4:6. Amazed I looked at him smiling, I reflected and took things calmly. At that moment I understood the purpose of my visit.
"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says" James 1:22.
Just like the guys at the foundation, we all have difficulty putting the word into practice. We know it, we have read it several times, but we find it hard to put it into practice, and that is where God comes in.
"He must become greater; I must become less" John 3:30.
Sometimes our reasons and feelings do not allow us to follow God's word and we deny ourselves the opportunity to live "The peace that surpasses all understanding". We want to be right, to do what we want, knowing that God asks us to do something else.
Let us pray permanently to God to help us to overcome our feelings, passions and desires, and that we will be able to live in fullness the promises of his word.
