The gift of being dad!

Happy Fathers' Day!

I am fortunate and blessed to be a dad to four beautiful children. Each with amazing qualities, personalities and totally different tastes, I love you kids! I am also very fortunate and blessed to have my dad close, very close so I can enjoy him.

On one of our afternoons together, I was talking with my dad about the great challenge of raising children to grow up well prepared, with great self-esteem, self-love and love for others, with good principles and values and many more qualities. I think this is the desire of all dads.

One of the things we agreed on is the importance of the mother's participation in the children's lives, it is definitive; but we also talked about how important it is to develop an affective bond between the father and the children.

As I say, when you have a calamity, no matter how old you are, you love your mother. Children are born with a biological bond with their mother, it is an obvious and unbreakable bond.

A father can say many things full of wisdom, experiences of his life, which are very important, but the most important thing is to develop an affective bond with the children. Consanguinity unites us but does not create a bond. The bond is formed when you take that being in your arms and say to the ear that you love him or her and that you will always be there for them. We dads unfortunately could not carry them inside our belly, but we do carry them inside our hearts.

As dads we are called to hug, kiss and caress. Doing so ratifies our bond as dads with our children, no one else will do it for us and no one else will fill that space in our children.

"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

This passage written by King Solomon tells us how important it is to create a bond with our children, so that everything we teach them they will carry in their hearts; and thus, when they go and walk their way, they will be confident and reassured that they received the word of life.

Being a dad is a great blessing, a blessing that starts from the mom's acceptance of being named dad. Take that gift, receive it with all your heart, enjoy every moment the title you have been given, the title of Dad!

God bless you!
